Froyo Fellas

#fbf to these sweet swirl Froyo Fellas I made a few years back. What are they even? Glad you asked. With swirls born of machines and magic, these dapper darlings inspire sugary mischief wherever they go. The spirit of a Froyo Fella is a dichotomy of crunchy, creamy complexity. Sharper than ice cream, these low fat adventurers brave the sunshine to seek a life outside the froyo shop, wild animals in their own right. The Froyo Fellas are full of wiggles and giggles, but sometimes bite--so watch your fingers.

Another stage in the Golden Toothed Beauty build

I only had a couple weeks to make this, so it was a lot of experimenting and pushing forward without all the planning I normally do. Here I was trying out a flexible rope and foam stem, which would’ve made it more like a snake flower. I ended up going a different direction with it, but I’m still kinda into this idea. What do you guys think? Are there snake flowers in my future?

They’re made out of L200, a closed-cell foam used in puppet and costume fabrication. It’s heat formable, can be carved/ sanded, and it’s easy to paint. I used this foam for most of the flower, finishing the surface with neoprene and acrylics to give it a resilient rubbery skin.

There’ll be an encore reception at Galeria Regina August 17th 5-9pm if you missed seeing this toothy beast the first time around.

Thanks so much to everyone who came out last night!

If you missed the opening or want to take a second look, the art will continue to hang through August, and we’ll have an encore reception August 17th. I’ll have a fresh batch of Gumheads in the upcoming show. This will be the last drop of Dubble Bubble and Very Berry Gumheads for the foreseeable future, so save the date if you want to score one! July 13th at Galleria Regina. A Gumhead getting its arms. These little guys are double cast, which is just what it sounds like. After casting and painting the core, I fit it into a second mold to cast the translucent layer.

Sneak peak at some blossoms waiting patiently for the art show. I can’t wait to take some good pictures of these! One of my favorite things about mold making getting to experiment with different looks on one sculpture. Each flower is a little different and completely one of a kind. These and more will be at Journey to Terra Flora, opening July 13th at Galeria Regina. Hope to see you there!
