About Breastables

I’m interested in creature art that inspires unexpected empathy through a subtle shift in perspective.

 

I made the Breastables by sculpting epoxy clay breasts onto ready-made decorative foam fruit. Using ready-made objects as a starting point created a fun color/ texture matching challenge. It was important for the breasts to feel like a natural extension of the produce, echoing elements that give each fruit a distinctive look.

 

Women’s bodies have long been compared to fruit, a problematic analogy that’s fascinating to explore. Nude women and fruit are classic art subjects. The women often feel as consumable as the fruit, another kind of still life. The Breastables are an uncanny blend of creature and object, bodies without faces that still radiate personhood.

Folk Tale 

(originating from the Akan people of present-day Ghana)

There was a time when people had no stories to tell. Nyame was hoarding them in a box in the sky, leaving the world empty and bereft of meaning. Anansi, son of the sky god, saw this and rose through the heavens on a silken thread to confront him. Nyame was impressed with his resolve, but unwilling to compromise. In exchange for the stories, he asked his son to bring him the most fearsome creatures in creation, believing it to be an impossible task. 
 
Anansi realized he’d have to utilize his best trait, trickery. He devised plans to defeat the creatures after studying their strengths, and bested each one: Onini the python, Osebo the leopard, and the deadly Mboro Hornets. After handing over his captives to the sky god, Nyame rewarded him by relinquishing the box, making Anansi the god of storytelling and wisdom.
 
Anansi appears as both an ordinary spider and a human, often manifesting as a combination of the two.

Origin Story

With swirls born of machines and magic, these dapper darlings inspire sugary mischief wherever they go. The spirit of a Froyo Fella is a dichotomy of crunchy, creamy complexity. Sharper than ice cream, these low fat adventurers brave the sunshine to seek a life outside the froyo shop, wild animals in their own right. The Froyo Fellas are full of wiggles and giggles, but sometimes bite–so watch your fingers.
